I am a week away from turning 70.

On one hand, I’m not freaked out.
I get up every day, prepared to dance
as fast as I can.
On the other hand, there is no doubt that the time left is alarmingly short.

I feel strong, vital, bursting with energy, mentally and physically robust. As you
all know, I live by the values of an elite
level of fitness.
But there is no denying that 70 is closer to 80…then 90…then 100.
And there is a gripping realization that the clock is ticking faster than ever before.

It’s a banner moment for women’s sports.

Our US Women’s Soccer Team is undisputedly the best in the world. Billboards around the country exhibit their smiling faces, their fit bodies. Hundreds of thousands now know their names. Rapinoe, Morgan, Lavelle. They’re tough, they’re physical, they’re technically brilliant and, more than anything, they’re a bonded team.
Congratulations TEAM USA. And may your law suit bring you the equal pay and respect you have so clearly earned.

AND…drum roll…what excitement the 15-year-old talent Coco Gauff brought to Wimbledon. Making history into the 4th round at her age, beating her idol Venus Williams along the way, Coco was not only graceful and athletic on the grass, but she was poised, respectful and grateful in her interviews.

Enjoy your bbq’s, parades, and celebrations of our Independence. This was the day, July 4th (actually, initially, July 2)that we the people declared our choice to live under the liberty of our own choices, rather than as subjects of a royal domain.
And we opened our borders to those seeking our liberty way of life. May we find over coming days compassion for those caged at our borders, recalling the time when we, every single one of us, arrived at American shores seeking a better way of life.

I’m of course flattered when any swimmer or athlete writes me words of admiration but, honestly, it touches me perhaps more significantly when someone from a completely different sphere has derived some inspiration from my actions or my words or the way I live my life.
Karen A. Clark is a master singer/performer, a chaser of big dreams, a woman I can put on a pedestal of refusing to be anything but bold.

My brilliant friend, Le Anne Schreiber, the first and still only woman editor of the New York Times Sports page, has succumbed to the same horrific lung cancer that took both her parents and her only sibling, brother Michael.

Le Anne was a pretty good land athlete but not much of a swimmer.
Thirty years ago I taught Le Anne—and my soulmate Candace Hogan--a proper freestyle in their idyllic summer pond upstate New York. Le Anne put her typical analytical brain into that stroke over the following decades, she and Candace picking swimming trips, from Mexico to Palm Springs and always back to the New York calm ponds. I’d meet up with them time to time, give them more pointers and was so very happy to see these two landlubbers actually glide across the surface.

The last night Le Anne was conscious she wrote a text to Candace:
Swim For Me.

She was the first woman to run a major American daily newspaper’s sports section — that of The New York Times. She was later an ombudswoman for ESPN.

It’s PRIDE month and I am proud indeed to be included in the list of athletes who have stood up, loud and proud, and now be named in memory of the powerful Stonewall history.

Best known for her world record swim from Cuba to Florida, Nyad’s greatest achievement was proving LGBTQ people could be normalized.

We at EverWalk present our fourth EPIC walk end of summer and TOMORROW is the last day for registration at the original fee.

We’ll start with a 20-mile tour of the iconic sites of Philadelphia, wind our way down through the Delaware and Maryland farmland and old small towns, and finish with a walking tour of our elegant capital, Wash DC.
